What is a lockdown system?
A lockdown system is a safety measure used in schools and other settings during an emergency.
Its purpose is to restrict movement to reduce risk, prevent disruption, and keep people safe.
Every school should have a clear lockdown policy in place. This outlines the steps staff and students must take if an incident requires everyone to stay in place.
In line with OFSTED guidance, a lockdown system must:
- Provide a distinct audible or visual alert that signals restricted movement is required.
- Be different in sound and appearance from the fire alarm to avoid confusion.
- Deliver a clear, reliable message quickly so that everyone knows how to respond.
A lockdown is not about creating fear, it's about ensuring safety, security, and preparedness in a calm and organised way.

Where can you use a Lockdown system?
- Primary Schools
- Secondary Schools
- Universities
- Offices
- Places of Worship
- Leisure Centres

What is Martyn’s Law?
Martyn’s Law (also known as the Protect Duty) is upcoming UK legislation designed to improve public safety at venues and events. It requires businesses and organisations to take proportionate steps to protect the public from terrorist attacks by enhancing security measures, training staff, and having clear response plans in place.
The law is named in memory of Martyn Hett, who was tragically killed in the 2017 Manchester Arena attack, and aims to ensure venues are better prepared to keep people safe.
